In a significant milestone for neonatal care, the Department of Pediatrics at Government Medical College (GMC) Doda successfully managed and discharged a newborn weighing 6 kilograms at birth, one of the heaviest babies ever delivered at the institution.
The infant, born on 25th October 2025 at 1:20 PM to a diabetic mother, faced severe respiratory distress within the first 30 minutes of life. Medical staff quickly recognized the critical condition and admitted the baby to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for advanced management and monitoring.
Due to this newborn’s large-for-gestational-age status and visible respiratory compromises, the NICU team initiated specialized neonatal respiratory support immediately. The baby underwent close observation, focusing on respiratory effort, oxygen saturation, blood sugar levels, temperature, and neurological activity.
Over the following days, the infant responded positively, enabling the gradual weaning of respiratory support. For the final 72 hours prior to discharge, the newborn maintained stable independent breathing, normal oxygenation, and adequate temperature regulation, showing no signs of apnea, cyanosis, or desaturation.
After demonstrating sustained clinical stability, the baby discharged in healthy condition, with routine follow-ups advised for continued care. This success highlights the competent management by Dr. Najmus Saqib, Head of Pediatrics, and further support from faculty members Dr. Narinder Singh, Dr. Ghansham Singh Katoch, Dr. Niraj K. Gupta, and Dr. Satish Sharma, along with their dedicated team of senior and junior residents.
Special acknowledgment extends to the nursing and paramedical staff at GMC Doda, whose vigilant monitoring, compassionate care, and unwavering commitment played a crucial role in the baby’s recovery.
This achievement underscores the growing neonatal expertise and teamwork within the Department of Pediatrics at GMC Doda. It reflects the institution’s enduring commitment to delivering quality, evidence-based, and compassionate care to newborns and children in the region, reaffirming its status as a center of excellence in pediatric healthcare.
