A Jammu and Kashmir Police constable faces arrest in connection with the tragic killing of a Gujjar youth, Mohammad Parvez, whose death sparked widespread outrage in July. Officials confirmed that the arrest of Selection Grade Constable Pawan Singh occurred on Wednesday following a special investigation into the firing incident that took place near Sure Chak village on July 24.
Muhammad Parvez, a 21-year-old from Niki Tawi, was fatally shot by police during what officials initially described as a shootout. The police claimed Parvez was involved in drug peddling, a narrative that was firmly rejected by his community. Activists and family members labeled the incident a ‘fake encounter,’ leading to protests from the Gujjar community, who demanded justice.
Following the severe backlash and significant public discontent, government authorities established a special investigation team (SIT) to probe the events leading to the shooting, while a magisterial inquiry was also ordered.
