On Tuesday, at a crucial High-Level Meeting of Like-Minded Global South countries during the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar called for a revitalized commitment to multilateralism. He highlighted the importance of solidarity among Global South nations and urged a collective effort to reform the United Nations and other global institutions.
In his remarks, Jaishankar noted the urgent necessity for the Global South to turn to multilateral frameworks. He stated that with an increase in global challenges and diversified risks, it is only natural for these nations to seek collaborative solutions through established international platforms.
Sharing insights on social media platform X, he laid out a structured approach comprising five key proposals aimed at amplifying the collective voice of the developing nations. The minister said, “To enhance solidarity and encourage collaboration, we must effectively utilize existing forums for consultations amongst Global South countries.”
Jaishankar’s call for comprehensive reform of the United Nations underscores a critical demand for revitalizing multilateralism as a whole. He proposed that the Global South should actively showcase its unique strengths, experiences, and achievements on the global platform. He cited several areas of significant contribution, including vaccines, digital technologies, educational initiatives, agricultural practices, and support for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs).
In addressing climate action and climate justice, the minister pointed out that the Global South should develop initiatives that cater specifically to its interests. He emphasized that merely aligning with the Global North’s perspectives would not serve the needs of developing nations. “We must redefine global challenges in our own context,” he asserted.
Moreover, Jaishankar highlighted the pivotal role of discussions surrounding emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence (AI). He stressed the necessity for developing countries to engage in these conversations to avoid being marginalized in the global technological landscape.
India’s leadership in advocating for the Global South has been prominent in various international forums. The country continues to assert its role in ensuring that developing nations have a significant impact on shaping global agendas. With a distinctive approach, India aims to foster multilateral cooperation while reinforcing the importance of understanding unique regional concerns. Jaishankar’s address marks a significant step towards garnering support for meaningful reforms in the United Nations and further solidifying ties among Global South nations, seeking equality in international relations.
As the world increasingly shifts toward a multipolar order, the role of the Global South becomes more critical. Nations within this group must collaborate more effectively to address pressing global issues while promoting their interests and rights within international institutions. By rallying together, Global South countries can create a unified front that advocates for a fair and equitable global governance structure.
