Hyderabad Cybercrime Police have arrested a 30-year-old software employee for allegedly creating a fake Instagram account to defame a woman with abusive and sexually explicit comments. The incident highlights the growing issue of online harassment and misuse of social media.
The accused, identified as a Kachiguda resident, allegedly targeted a politically exposed woman through a fake profile. As per V Aravind Babu, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Cyber Crimes, the suspect created the account to post derogatory comments on a video of the woman originally shared by the ‘Pura Local’ Instagram channel in October 2025.
The woman filed a complaint leading to an investigation. Police registered a case under Sections 66(D) and 67 of the Information Technology Act and related provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). This case underscores the serious implications of cyber defamation and harassment, especially in cases involving politically prominent individuals.
Authorities confirmed that the suspect concealed his identity while using the fake account to post offensive content, aiming to harm the woman’s reputation. During the investigation, police seized a mobile phone from the accused, further linking him to the crime.
