Bihar Governor Declares Kashmir the ‘Crown of India’

Bihar Governor Arif Mohammad Khan emphasized Kashmir’s significance, labeling it the ‘crown of India’ during his visit to Hazratbal Dargah in Srinagar on Thursday. He stated that the region must attain complete normalcy to govern itself effectively.

Khan’s emotional connection with Kashmir runs deep, as he has visited the Valley numerous times throughout his career. “I tell all of India that Kashmir is the crown of our head,” he asserted, highlighting the warmth and engagement he experienced with Kashmiri students during his tenure in the Union Home Ministry in the 1980s.

Reflecting on those days, he reminisced about the friendships he forged in Aligarh and Amritsar, noting the incredible hospitality of Kashmiris. “I have a long-standing bond with the people of Kashmir. Your hospitality is unmatched,” Khan remarked, eliciting sentiments of unity and understanding.

Addressing the political landscape of India, Khan highlighted the evolution of democracy, asserting that it transcends dynastic politics. “In our democracy, the sovereignty lies with the people, not just the leaders. Anyone, born in an ordinary house, can aspire to the highest offices,” he said, reinforcing the principles of inclusivity and opportunity.

The Governor shared his concerns about the enduring pain of partition and ongoing conflicts that have plagued Kashmir. He expressed sorrow for the struggles faced by the people, stating, “When a country is divided, hate becomes institutionalised, and the people of Kashmir have paid the highest price for it.” This perspective underscored the urgent need for healing and restoration in the region.

Khan called for collective responsibility among all Indians to foster peace in Kashmir. He reminded the nation of its shared dream for the region to mirror the stability of other states. “The entire nation desires Kashmir to function seamlessly, but it requires establishing normal conditions first,” he declared.

In a poignant appeal for empathy, he articulated that the safety and stability of Kashmir resonates with national and human responsibility. “Whenever there is pain, it is our duty to respond because insecurity in one place threatens security everywhere,” Khan concluded, urging unity and peace for the beloved region.
