Group Captain Ranjit Sidhu Receives Vir Chakra for Gallantry

Indian Air Force (IAF) fighter pilot Group Captain Ranjit Singh Sidhu has earned the esteemed Vir Chakra for gallantry, following his remarkable displays of courage during Operation Sindoor in May. The official announcement came via a statement in the Government Gazette on October 4.

During the four-day military operation between India and Pakistan, Group Captain Sidhu led his squadron in multiple deep-penetration strike missions. They successfully engaged designated targets with surgical precision against complex threat scenarios and layered air defences.

The Vir Chakra, one of India’s highest wartime gallantry awards, recognizes extraordinary acts of bravery. Group Captain Sidhu’s leadership and dedication stood out as he executed operations from three different locations along the Western sector. His ability to make dynamic, real-time decisions under pressure contributed significantly to the success of these missions.

Describing his heroics, the official citation highlights that he showed unwavering dedication to duty while disregarding personal safety in the high-stakes combat environment. His bold leadership motivated his team and ensured the safety of fellow airmen.

Under his command, the IAF enhanced its offensive posture, gaining a decisive edge during the operations. The successful missions countered evolving threats, illustrating the strategic excellence of the Indian Air Force.

Nine IAF pilots received Vir Chakras following their engagement in precision strikes on terrorist infrastructure and military targets in Pakistan-controlled territories during Operation Sindoor. This military action was initiated as a response to the Pahalgam terror attack.

Among the awardees were Group Captains Manish Arora, Animesh Patni, and Kunal Kalra. Group Captain Arora’s citation commended his courage and leadership during an unescorted strike mission, where he navigated heavily defended airspace while executing low-level night maneuvers, achieving pinpoint accuracy amid enemy threats.

Another notable recipient, Squadron Leader Rizwan Malik, received commendation for his audacious maneuvers that caused tactical confusion among enemy formations, showcasing exceptional valour on the battlefield.

President Droupadi Murmu approved a total of 127 gallantry awards and 40 distinguished service awards this year, coinciding with India’s 79th Independence Day celebrations, honoring the sacrifices rendered by these brave servicemen.
