The Crime Branch of Jammu and Kashmir Police has charged two residents of Punjab in a fake recruitment scam involving the Military Engineering Services (MES). The chargesheet, filed on Monday, follows allegations of duping two individuals from Samba district out of Rs 14 lakh with false job promises.
The accused, identified as Bakshish Singh from Amritsar and Amandeep Singh from Jalandhar, face serious allegations regarding the fraudulent scheme uncovered in 2023. They allegedly convinced the victims to pay large sums while ensuring them jobs in the MES, which never materialized.
The case was initiated based on complaints lodged by the victims who reported the fraudulent activities to the Special Crime Wing (SCW) of the Crime Branch. The investigation revealed that the victims received fake appointment letters and were misled into traveling to various locations such as Ranchi and Meerut for purported medical assessments and joining procedures.
During the course of the investigation, Crime Branch authorities confirmed that the appointment letters provided to the victims were counterfeit and had never been issued by the MES. This revelation intensified the urgency of the investigation, leading to the filing of the chargesheet under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.
Bakshish Singh was apprehended in Amritsar following diligent efforts by law enforcement. In contrast, the co-accused Amandeep Singh remains at large, despite extensive search operations and a lookout notice issued against him. Authorities have initiated proceedings to declare him a proclaimed offender.
The investigation, spearheaded by the SCW, involved meticulous collection of evidence. This included documentary proof, digital records, and forensic analysis of the questioned documents. The thorough exploration of financial trails uncovered significant bank transaction records supporting the victims’ claims.
In a preventive advisory, the crime branch has urged the public to exercise caution when engaging with job offers. People are encouraged to validate the authenticity of recruitment announcements through official government channels prior to making any financial commitments.
