Former President Ramnath Kovind expressed concern over the reluctance of “good people” to participate in politics, urging the youth to actively engage in the nation’s political landscape. He made these remarks on Thursday while addressing the annual Vijayadashmi rally of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) at Reshimbagh ground in Nagpur.
In his address, Kovind highlighted the influence of RSS founder Keshav Baliram Hedgewar and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar on his formative years. He stated, “I was inspired by the values of national unity and social harmony shared by Dr. Ambedkar and Dr. Hedgewar. There is no casteism and discrimination in RSS.”
The former president underscored the importance of Hedgewar’s thoughts in helping him understand society and the nation more clearly. He lamented that while challenges persist in the political realm, the absence of virtuous individuals makes it difficult to effect positive change.
“We need individuals with integrity in politics,” Kovind emphasized, extending a heartfelt plea to young people. He encouraged them to embrace a role in politics, stating that their involvement is crucial for a prosperous democracy.
In addition to urging youth participation, Kovind revealed that he is working on a book titled ‘Triumph of the Indian Republic,’ highlighting the importance of understanding the country’s journey and contributions to democracy.
The Vijayadashmi rally also commemorated the centenary celebrations of the RSS, which Hedgewar founded on Dussehra in 1925. The event witnessed a gathering of thousands, reiterating the organization’s commitment to promoting national unity.
Notably, Kovind’s remarks resonate beyond Nagpur, addressing a nationwide concern regarding the political apathy among the youth. Political analysts suggest that engaging young people can lead to significant transformations in governance and policy-making. As a former leader who has seen the evolution of Indian politics, Kovind’s insights carry considerable weight.
His call comes at a time when debates about the intersection of politics and societal values attract both public interest and scrutiny. Engaging ‘good people’ in politics may act as a remedy to numerous systemic issues, pushing for integrity and accountability.
Overall, Kovind’s speech at the Vijayadashmi rally serves as a reminder of the civic responsibility every citizen holds in shaping the political future of the nation. It challenges the youth to rise above indifference and become advocates for change.
