Congress Urges Govt to Address Legitimate Aspirations of Ladakh

The Congress party on Friday demanded that the government address the legitimate aspirations of the people of Ladakh promptly. The party emphasized that the distress felt by Ladakhis should not only prompt further discussions but should also lead to concrete actions that fulfill their needs.

The Congress’ call for urgent intervention comes in the wake of protests demanding statehood, which turned violent on Wednesday. This unrest resulted in tragic outcomes, including the deaths of four individuals and injuries to over 90 others.

Jairam Ramesh, the Congress general secretary in-charge of communications, expressed that six years ago, the creation of the Union Territory of Ladakh ignited hope among its residents. However, Ramesh lamented that these expectations have transitioned into profound disappointment and disenchantment.

According to Ramesh, the people of Ladakh now feel that their land and employment rights are under significant threat. He criticized the current situation where local administrations and elected bodies seem to be overshadowed by the Lieutenant Governor and bureaucracy.

The demands for legal protections under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution and for establishing an elected legislature have only resulted in endless meetings, he noted. The lack of tangible progress has fueled frustration among the citizens.

Ramesh further highlighted the “great uncertainty” that has arisen due to China’s actions along the Line of Actual Control. He criticized the Prime Minister’s remarks from June 19, 2020, that seemingly gave China a clean chit.

Ladakh holds immense cultural, economic, ecological, and strategic significance for India, Ramesh asserted. He emphasized, “The people of Ladakh have, at all times, been proud Indians to their very core. Their distress and anguish must awaken the Government of India’s conscience.”

The situation in Ladakh remains tense but stable, with police and paramilitary forces imposing a strict curfew in Leh town following the violent protests. The calm comes after significant unrest, which has seen around 50 individuals detained in relation to the violence that erupted during a shutdown called by the Leh Apex Body (LAB). This organization advocates for the extension of the Sixth Schedule and full statehood for Ladakh.

As the government faces increasing pressure to address these pressing issues, the Congress party reiterates the need for swift action. The voices of Ladakhis stand united, demanding respect, recognition, and, most importantly, realization of their genuine aspirations.
