Omar Abdullah Welcomes US Ambassador; Rejects Foreign Intervention

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah welcomed US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, during his visit to Kashmir on Wednesday. Abdullah stated unequivocally that matters concerning regional governance are strictly domestic and should not be influenced by external entities. His comments reflect a commitment to addressing local issues independently.

“After a long time, a US Ambassador is visiting Jammu & Kashmir. We will speak with him, and I would like to hear him,” Abdullah said regarding Gor’s high-profile diplomatic trip.

Setting a clear tone for the discussions, Abdullah emphasized the limitations of foreign influence in Kashmir’s governance. He remarked, “Our problems are not his concern. It is not my habit to complain about our issues to the ambassador of another country.” He underscored the belief that the resolution of local issues rests solely with the Indian government.

Omar Abdullah highlighted several challenges faced by the residents of Srinagar, including persistent waterlogging in certain areas. He explained that this issue stems from historical lapses in the city’s civic planning. “Waterlogging in parts of Srinagar is a legacy issue,” he stated, noting that it is not a problem arising from recent administrations. He questioned the permissions granted for construction that lacked adequate drainage facilities.

Addressing these legacy problems, Abdullah explained that the current administration is working to rectify past mistakes. “We have identified the problematic areas. When we receive warnings from the Met Department, we arrange additional pumpage,” he added, demonstrating a proactive approach to improving infrastructure and civic conditions in Srinagar.

In conclusion, Omar Abdullah’s remarks during this diplomatic engagement highlight the importance of local governance and the sentiment that external involvement in regional matters is unwarranted. His focus remains on finding solutions at home rather than seeking assistance from abroad, reinforcing a strong message about sovereignty and self-reliance in Jammu & Kashmir.
