Indian cricketer Sarfaraz Khan has officially joined the Team India camp ahead of the first Test against Sri Lanka, which will be held at Galle starting August 15. Sarfaraz steps in to replace Sai Sudharsan, who was ruled out of the series due to an injury.
The first Test kicks off a two-match series between the two teams, with important implications for both sides in the World Test Championship standings. As of now, India stands fifth after securing four wins and suffering four losses in nine matches, holding a Points Percentage (PCT) of 48.150.
Sarfaraz expressed excitement about his selection on social media, sharing a selfie in Indian colors. He showcased his lean physique, indicating his rigorous fitness regime over the past few months.
Previously, Sarfaraz played for India against New Zealand in November 2024, a series resulting in India’s first home series loss in twelve years. In total, he has participated in six Tests for India, amassing 371 runs at an average of 37.10, including a century and three fifties, with a personal best of 150.
After an impressive domestic season, Sarfaraz’s return to the national team appears timely. He accumulated 429 runs in seven Ranji Trophy matches at an average of 53.62, along with a century and a half-century, with his highest score being 227.
In the T20 format, Sarfaraz excelled in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT), scoring 329 runs in seven innings at an exceptional average of 65.80 and a strike rate of 203.09. His performance included a century along with three fifties.
Sarfaraz’s prowess continued in the 50-over format during the Vijay Hazare Trophy, where he scored 303 runs in six matches at an impressive average of 75.75 and a strike rate of 190.56, complete with a century and two fifties.
His formidable performances earned him a contract with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) worth Rs 75 lakh. Though he had a modest outing with 161 runs in seven innings at an average of 23.00 during the IPL, he is keen to make a mark in the upcoming Test series.
Additionally, Sarfaraz recently participated in the Mumbai T20 League, representing the Aakash Tigers MWS. He scored 161 runs in five innings with an average of 32.20 and a strike rate of 214.67.
