Monsoon To Enter North Bengal in 3-4 Days: IMD Update

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced on Monday that the southwest monsoon is expected to enter West Bengal’s sub-Himalayan districts, including Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Jalpaiguri, within the next three to four days. This prediction indicates a significant weather change as northern districts of the state already face pre-monsoon rainfall.

Weather experts from the IMD confirmed that conditions remain favourable for the southwest monsoon to advance into these areas, marking a late arrival beyond the usual entry date of June 6. The bulletin highlights a heavy downpour predicted over the next few days, primarily affecting the sub-Himalayan regions.

Despite the impending rains, humidity levels in southern Bengal remained high, even with sporadic rainfall in several locations. The IMD’s latest updates indicate that districts like Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, and Cooch Behar should prepare for heavy rainfall in the next 48 hours.

In a detailed observation, the IMD reported that Alipurduar, which borders Assam, recorded the highest rainfall within the past 24 hours, with measurements reaching an impressive 133 mm. Other areas also saw notable rain, including Jalpaiguri with 53 mm, Cooch Behar at 18 mm, Darjeeling with 7.8 mm, and Kalimpong at 19 mm.

The regional weather patterns indicate that while some southern districts will experience light to moderate rain, the focus shifts to the heavy rainfall conditions anticipated in northern West Bengal. With the ancient Himalayas forming a natural barrier, this weather pattern plays a crucial role in influencing rainfall distribution.

Farmers and residents in these areas brace for the arrival of the southwest monsoon, traditionally a vital source of water for agriculture and other essential activities. The late onset, however, raises concerns about agricultural productivity and water supply.

Speaking on the situation, a senior meteorologist emphasized, “The arrival of the monsoon is crucial for the region’s agrarian economy. While we forecasted a slight delay, we remain optimistic about beneficial rains in the coming days.”

The IMD urges residents and local authorities to remain vigilant and prepared for the heavy rainfall predicted. Preparedness remains essential, especially for those living in flood-prone areas.

As the weather continues to evolve, officials assure that they will monitor conditions closely to provide timely updates to ensure public safety. With the monsoon’s arrival, North Bengal anticipates a seasonal transformation, bringing much-needed relief and revitalizing the ecosystem.
