Srinagar Records Coldest Night at -2.1°C This Winter

Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, recorded its coldest night of the winter on November 13, 2023, as temperatures plummeted to minus 2.1°C, according to the Meteorological (MeT) Department. The unrelenting cold has left Srinagar residents bracing for harsher winter weather in the days ahead.

The Pahalgam region took the crown for the coldest temperature in the Valley, with the mercury settling at a chilling minus 3.8°C. These temperatures mark a significant drop as the winter season fully sets in, and residents are preparing for the implications of the extreme cold.

Director of the MeT, Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad, provided an update on the current weather conditions. He confirmed that there are no predictions for a wet spell within the next week. In fact, he stated that the night temperatures are likely to remain consistent until November 17, potentially leading to another cold spell.

Dr. Ahmad noted, ‘A slight improvement in night temperatures may occur for two to three days after November 17,’ which many locals will welcome as they seek relief from the biting cold. The cold temperatures have sparked fears about the impact on agriculture, livestock, and daily life.

This drastic temperature dip has resulted in frost formation across various parts of Srinagar and the surrounding Valley. Many residents experienced white-coated landscapes during early morning hours, marking the onset of harsh winter conditions that are now a defining characteristic of Jammu and Kashmir’s climate.

Authorities have discussed ways to cope with the cold weather, emphasizing the need for citizens to stay warm and be aware of the potential hazards associated with low temperatures. Meanwhile, tourism operators in the region are gearing up for an influx of visitors drawn to the picturesque winter landscape, despite the chilling temperatures.

As the mercury continues to drop, residents are reminded to prepare adequately for the winter months ahead. Local shops have begun offering winter essentials, from warm clothing to heating solutions, to assist people in adapting to the cold.

Srinagar and its surrounding areas have had to combat severe weather conditions before, and the community is resilient. With appropriate measures and advice from the MeT, locals appear determined to make the best of what this winter brings, viewing it as an opportunity for tourism and winter sports.

The MeT Department continues to monitor the weather closely, and residents are encouraged to stay updated on forecasts for any significant changes in temperature or weather patterns.
