Intense Contest for Four Rajya Sabha Seats in J&K

The political landscape of Jammu and Kashmir heats up as nine candidates file nominations for the four Rajya Sabha seats. This contest involves a fierce rivalry, notably between the National Conference (NC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), underscoring the political dynamics of the region. The nominations were submitted to Returning Officer Manoj Pandita, Secretary of the Assembly, today.

Among the candidates, four hail from the ruling NC while three represent the BJP. The first notification reveals that Choudhary Muhammad Ramzan of the NC and Dr. Ali Muhammad Mir of the BJP, along with independent candidate Prabhakar Dada, have submitted their nominations for one seat. The NC coalition commands a decisive 53 MLAs, positioning Ramzan for a strong lead in this electoral race without needing Congress’s assistance.

Meanwhile, the BJP, fortified by 28 MLAs, aims to put forth a competitive showing.

For another single seat under the second notification, Sajad Kichloo of the NC and Rakesh Mahajan of the BJP have thrown their hats into the ring. Given the political momentum, Kichloo appears likely to replicate Ramzan’s expected success.

The third notification is particularly notable as it involves two seats. Candidates Gurwinder Singh Oberoi, alias Shammi Oberoi, and Imran Dar represent the NC, while BJP’s Sat Pal Sharma and independent Kante Sayanna complete the list. Political observers predict that the top two candidates with the highest votes across these nominees will secure the seats, with NC expected to allocate 29 votes to Oberoi and 24 votes to Dar. The BJP legislators are anticipated to support Sat Sharma completely.

After submitting his nomination, BJP candidate Rakesh Mahajan expressed gratitude towards the party leadership, displaying a confident outlook towards the elections. He remarked, “I am thankful to the national leadership for this honour. I am sure we will win all three seats. The BJP gives equal opportunity to every worker, and all get their due right,” highlighting a party-focused approach.

BJP president Sat Sharma, also contesting for a Rajya Sabha seat, criticized the ruling NC while vowing to leverage the BJP’s strengths in this electoral battle. He stated, “We will fight with all our strength and script history. We aim to win more than one seat this time,” asserting the BJP’s determination to expand its political footprint.

Dr. Ali Muhammad Mir joined in, emphasizing his gratitude for the trust bestowed on him. He commented, “Entire Kashmir is happy. I thank the central leadership for considering me competent for this responsibility,” underlining the significance of local representation in the national assembly.

In response, NC chief spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq confirmed the successful completion of the nomination process. He asserted, “We are confident of winning all four seats. However, it is unfortunate that Congress did not agree to what was offered. I urge all secular forces to support our candidates,” demonstrating NC’s strategic focus in garnering broader support.

Emphasizing the need for addressing regional concerns, senior NC leader Choudhary Muhammad Ramzan vowed to channel developmental and political issues within Parliament. “We will come up to people’s expectations. There are a number of issues — developmental and political — that must be addressed, and we will talk about them,” he stated, confirming the NC’s commitment to represent public interests.

The elections for the Rajya Sabha seats from Jammu and Kashmir are scheduled for later this month, stirring significant political excitement across the region.
