Today, Sakeena Itoo, Minister for Health and Medical Education, inaugurated the Annual Sports Meet-2025 at Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar. Held at the Boys Hostel playground in Bemina, this two-day event aims to foster a culture of physical fitness among medical professionals.
In her address, Itoo emphasized the vital connection between physical fitness and the mental well-being of healthcare professionals. She stated, “Participating in sports not only alleviates stress but also significantly enhances the quality of healthcare delivery.” Her remarks underscored the need for a balanced life even in rigorous medical fields.
The Minister praised GMC Srinagar for organizing the event and highlighted the necessity of upgrading facilities at the Boys Hostel playground. She urged the administration to enhance these amenities to promote greater student participation in extracurricular activities.
This year’s sports meet, meticulously planned under the watchful eye of Chairman Sports Committee Dr. Salim Iqbal, features a diverse array of competitions. Participants can look forward to engaging in sports such as cricket, volleyball, football, badminton, table tennis, and traditional indoor games like carrom.
Track and field events also play a significant role in this sports meet. Competitors will vie in races including the 100m, 200m, 400m, along with relays. Additionally, field events like shot put, javelin throw, and discus throw promise to showcase the athletic prowess of students and professionals alike.
Adding a fun element, the event introduces traditional games such as matka race, sack race, and spoon and egg race. These activities aim to boost team spirit and camaraderie among participants.
The sports meet witnessed a remarkable turnout. Among the attendees were Principal Dr. Iffat Hassan Shah, Administrator Mohammad Ashraf Hakak, and various Heads of Departments, along with faculty members, students, and staff. Their participation reflects the unity and enthusiasm within the college.
