Minister Javed Ahmed Rana Advocates for Tribal Heritage Preservation

Minister for Tribal Affairs, Javed Ahmed Rana, emphasized the critical need for collective and sustained efforts to preserve, protect, and promote tribal values that form the identity of communities in the Pir Panjal region. Speaking at a vibrant Tribal Mela organized by the Tribal Affairs Department in collaboration with the District Administration at Sagra, Mendhar (Poonch), Rana stated, “Development must not come at the cost of cultural erosion.”

He stressed an integrative approach that balances progress with tradition, warning that unchecked modern influences could dilute tribal customs and moral frameworks. His remarks came amid a gathering of enthusiastic locals whose participation underscored the importance of tribal heritage.

Rana reiterated the Omar Abdullah Government’s commitment to fostering inclusive development, asserting the goal of building a resilient, self-reliant tribal society that remains rooted in traditions. He commended the Tribal Affairs Department and local administration for their efforts in organizing the event, describing it as a meaningful step towards development with dignity.

The Tribal Mela attracted a large number of attendees and showcased tribal heritage, food, and traditional wisdom. Stalls featured a variety of indigenous cuisines, medicinal plants, and healthcare knowledge systems, reflecting the rich cultural tapestry of the region. A free medical camp supported public health with consultations and services, highlighting the community-centric ethos of the event.

By hosting such celebrations, the government demonstrates its resolve to ensure that development policies remain rooted in lived tribal realities, while simultaneously celebrating cultural identity and heritage. Minister Rana’s call for unity in preserving traditions resonated deeply with the audience at the mela.

Chairperson DDC Poonch Tazeem Akhtar, Deputy Commissioner Poonch Ashok Kumar Sharma, and numerous senior officers attended the occasion, reinforcing the cooperative spirit between authorities and local communities. Their presence signaled a shared commitment to the preservation of tribal cultures amid the pressures of modernization.

As discussions around tribal rights and cultural preservation gain momentum, the Minister’s insights pose a timely reminder that while development is essential, it should not overshadow the rich heritage of tribal communities. The Mendhar Tribal Mela stands as a testament to the vibrant culture of the Pir Panjal region and the community’s resilience in the face of change.
