Farooq Abdullah Praises Efforts to Revive J&K Tourism

National Conference (NC) president Farooq Abdullah commended the Jammu and Kashmir government on Monday for its renewed efforts to revive tourism after the tragic Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, which claimed 26 lives, primarily tourists.

The government’s initiatives come as the state reopens more tourist destinations, aiming to restore confidence among visitors and promote the region’s rich cultural heritage and unparalleled natural beauty.

On World Tourism Day, observed on September 27, Abdullah extended warm greetings to the residents of Jammu and Kashmir and to those worldwide who cherish the region’s scenic beauty. He highlighted the significance of tourism as an essential livelihood for thousands, deeply woven into the social fabric of the area.

Reflecting on the importance of tourism, Abdullah stated, “As the world emphasizes the role of tourism, it becomes a moment for us to reaffirm our commitment. This sector is vital not just for economic upliftment but for preserving our way of life. It binds us together as a community.”

He praised the Omar Abdullah-led government for its proactive response during challenging times, specifically mentioning the swift and effective measures implemented to rebuild tourist confidence in the aftermath of the Pahalgam attack. Abdullah asserted, “These efforts solidified Jammu and Kashmir’s reputation as a safe and inviting tourism destination, laying down a strong foundation for sustainable tourism growth.”

The National Conference leader welcomed the recent decision by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to reopen several tourist hotspots that had been closed following the attack. He urges equal priority in promoting development across all regions of Jammu and Kashmir, notably the Chenab and Pir Panjal areas, which he noted also hold significant tourism potential.

Abdullah called for a focus on sustainable tourism models, emphasizing the importance of protecting the environment while also preserving the local culture. He stated, “As we reopen and promote our tourism, let’s prioritize eco-friendly practices that honor our land and lifestyle.”

In closing, he remarked on the importance of this occasion, saying, “Let this World Tourism Day remind us of our collective responsibility to cultivate a peaceful, progressive Jammu and Kashmir, where every visitor is respected, and every local citizen enjoys the fruits of tourism-led growth.”
