The Indian Railways has revealed plans to extend the Vande Bharat Express, currently operating between Katra and Srinagar, to originate from Jammu. This move aims to improve regional connectivity and streamline travel for commuters and pilgrims.
On the extension, Divisional Railway Manager Jammu, Vivek Kumar, confirmed that preparations are in full swing to facilitate this semi-high-speed service. He noted, however, that the project faced delays due to significant damage to railway tracks caused by recent floods and incessant rains.
“We are working on it. The delay occurred because of massive damage to tracks due to floods and heavy rains,” Kumar stated during a press briefing. He added that restoration work progresses rapidly, assuring the public that the service will launch promptly once safety clearances are obtained.
The introduction of the Katra–Srinagar Vande Bharat service earlier this year significantly reduced travel time between the Valley and the base camp of the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine. This planned extension from Jammu is set to further enhance regional connectivity, benefitting commuters, pilgrims, and tourists alike.
Once operational, officials anticipate that the Jammu–Srinagar Vande Bharat Express will run daily, offering improved travel comfort and reduced journey time. This upgrade marks a significant development in India’s railway modernization efforts.
