Tight Security Ensures Peaceful Independence Day in Kashmir

In anticipation of Independence Day celebrations, authorities have implemented a robust and multi-layered security strategy across Kashmir. V K Birdi, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) for Kashmir, emphasized these measures while addressing the media on Tuesday, highlighting the significance of maintaining peace during the festivities.

Birdi confirmed during his statement that the Jammu and Kashmir Police consistently upholds stringent security protocols, not just in Srinagar, but across various districts within the valley. “Multi-layered security arrangements are in place, focusing on specific venues and surrounding areas,” he stated.

The IGP addressed inquiries regarding the ongoing investigations into recent attacks that occurred in Anantnag and Pulwama. He stated, “The investigation is ongoing, and it wouldn’t be appropriate to disclose more at this moment. We will provide updates when the information is clear.”

Encouraging community involvement, Birdi urged residents to actively participate in the Independence Day celebrations. “This is a public function, and the police’s role is to assist and facilitate. We call on everyone to join us and make the celebrations successful,” he remarked.

On Monday, he assessed the overall security landscape during a review meeting aimed at preparing for the upcoming festivities. Key security officials, including the IG BSF and IG CRPF, participated in the meeting, which reviewed arrangements for Independence Day across all valley districts.

During this meeting, district police chiefs outlined specific preparations made in their jurisdictions. Birdi directed officials to intensify monitoring and patrolling in sensitive areas to ensure effective area domination.

The IGP also focused on the primary function scheduled at Bakshi Stadium in Srinagar. He required all preparations to be finalized in advance and called for heightened vigilance at night at strategically important checkpoints around the city.

Strong caution towards elements that threaten public peace guided Birdi’s directives, urging officers to remain alert and proactive. “We need enhanced alertness across all jurisdictions,” he stressed during the meeting.

As part of these heightened security measures, police personnel conducted surprise checks and frisking operations in areas like Lal Chowk. These actions reflect the commitment to ensuring a secure environment throughout the valley.

The proactive stance taken by the authorities aims to balance the need for security with the residents’ right to celebrate Independence Day freely. As the day approaches, local officials continue to prepare for a successful and inclusive celebration across Kashmir.
