In a remarkable achievement for neonatal care, the Department of Pediatrics at Government Medical College (GMC) Doda successfully managed a newborn weighing 6 kilograms—one of the heaviest babies ever delivered at the institution. This milestone occurred on 25th October 2025, marking a significant feat for the medical team.
The newborn arrived at 1:20 PM, delivered to a mother with diabetes. Within the first 30 minutes of life, the baby showed severe respiratory distress, prompting immediate admission to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for specialized intervention. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, medical personnel sprang into action.
Due to the infant’s large-for-gestational-age classification and respiratory challenges, healthcare providers initiated advanced neonatal respiratory support. The baby underwent close monitoring for vital signs, including respiratory effort, oxygen saturation, blood sugar levels, and neurological function. This vigilant observation spanned several days, during which the infant began to show promising signs of improvement.
As the days progressed, the baby responded positively to treatment, allowing healthcare professionals to gradually reduce the respiratory support. Notably, for the final 72 hours before discharge, the infant maintained stable independent breathing, normal oxygenation levels, and appropriate temperature regulation, with no signs of apnea or desaturation.
Upon demonstrating sustained clinical stability, the newborn was discharged in good health, with routine follow-up care advised for continued monitoring. The successful management of this complex case underscores not only the NICU’s capabilities but also the collaborative spirit of the entire medical team.
The pediatric team, led by Dr. Najmus Saqib, Head of Pediatrics, played a crucial role in guiding the treatment process. They worked closely with esteemed faculty members including Dr. Narinder Singh, Dr. Ghansham Singh Katoch, Dr. Niraj K. Gupta, and Dr. Satish Sharma, alongside the dedicated senior and junior residents.
This achievement belongs to the dedicated nursing and paramedical staff of GMC Doda, whose vigilant monitoring and compassionate care proved indispensable to the recovery of the newborn. Their unwavering commitment to patient care significantly enhanced the quality of treatment received.
The case highlights the growing expertise in neonatal care at GMC Doda. It serves as a testament to the institution’s enduring commitment to delivering quality and evidence-based healthcare to newborns and children in the region. This achievement not only reflects the hospital’s capabilities but also its mission to ensure the well-being of vulnerable populations, underscoring the importance of teamwork in healthcare.
