Kohli and Rohit Focus on 2027 ODI World Cup Plans, Gambhir Urges Present Mindset

India’s shining cricket stars, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, are keen on participating in the 2027 ODI World Cup. However, head coach Gautam Gambhir emphasized on Tuesday the need to prioritize the present over long-term aspirations.

Gambhir’s comments come amidst a significant transition within the Indian cricket team, highlighted by Shubman Gill’s recent appointment as the ODI captain. As the selectors take a fresh approach to the 50-over format, questions loom over the roles of Kohli and Rohit, who will be 39 and 40 years old, respectively, by the time the 2027 World Cup rolls around.

“The 50-over World Cup is still two and a half years away. It is crucial to stay focused on the present,” Gambhir remarked. “Both players possess undeniable quality, and their experience will be invaluable during the upcoming series in Australia. Ideally, they can contribute to a successful team effort.”

As India embarks on a rigorous schedule featuring nine ODIs against Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand, Gambhir indicated that the performances of Kohli and Rohit in these matches will significantly influence their potential selection for the World Cup.

In his inaugural year as head coach, Gambhir is keen on establishing a solid foundation for team selection, focusing on nurturing new talent. He explained the attributes he seeks in players aspiring for the national team: “Talent is paramount, along with a strong work ethic and good character. In red-ball cricket, a player’s hunger for success is equally crucial.”

Recognizing the fierce competition within international cricket, Gambhir acknowledged the challenges many players face. “International cricket is an insecure environment due to limited spots,” he pointed out. “It’s essential to provide players with a fair chance to showcase their abilities instead of continuously adjusting the lineup.”

Gambhir expressed his reservations regarding the terminology related to player selection. “The term ‘dropping players’ doesn’t sit well with me. Instead, we should say ‘selecting players.’ A coach should exercise empathy when a player misses out,” he asserted.

Affirming the team’s diligent efforts during the recent England tour, Gambhir commended the players for their discipline and work ethic. “The discipline exhibited by the Test squad in England was commendable; for me, it indicated progress,” he concluded.
