Sheetal Devi Clinches Para World Archery Gold at 18

Gwangju (South Korea), Sep 27: Eighteen-year-old Indian armless archer Sheetal Devi created history on Saturday by defeating Oznur Cure Girdi, the world No.1 from Turkiye, with a score of 146-143 to win gold in the women’s compound individual category at the Para World Archery Championship.

This remarkable achievement marks Sheetal’s third medal in the championship, as she previously secured a bronze in the mixed team event alongside Toman Kumar, overcoming Great Britain’s Jodie Grinham and Nathan MacQueen with a score of 152-149.

In the compound women’s open team category, Sheetal and her partner Sarita won silver after a fierce encounter against Turkey.

The individual final proved to be a nail-biting contest. Both archers tied at 29-all in the first end. However, Sheetal demonstrated exceptional skill, achieving three perfect shots to win the second end with a score of 30-27.

The pressure intensified during the third end, where another tie at 29 left Sheetal leading by two points, 116-114, despite a minor setback in the fourth end, where she scored 28 compared to Girdi’s 29.

Sheetal sealed her victory and secured her first gold by hitting a perfect set of three 10s in the final end, showcasing her outstanding talent and determination.

Prior to reaching this milestone, the talented archer from Jammu and Kashmir defeated Jodie Grinham in the semifinals with an impressive score of 145-140.

This title clash served as a redemption for Sheetal, who had narrowly lost to Girdi in the individual final at the 2023 Pilsen World Championships, falling short by just two points, 140-138.

In the earlier open team final, despite a strong start from Sheetal and Sarita, where they outscored their Turkish opponents 38-37 in the opening end, they ultimately succumbed to the pressure. The Turkish duo answered back effectively, levelling the score at 76-all after the second end.

As nerves began to affect the Indian archers in the third end, they struggled through a total of 36 points, allowing Turkey to gain a commanding lead. The Turkish team displayed near-perfection, scoring 39 in their final end, securing victory with a score of 152-148.

Sheetal’s incredible journey not only inspires fellow athletes but also showcases the immense potential of determination in overcoming physical challenges in sports. Her achievements in the Para World Archery Championship have brought pride to India, highlighting the spirit of perseverance and excellence.
