The Supreme Court of India on Tuesday adjourned the hearing for pleas filed by the committee of management of Sambhal\u2019s Jama Masjid. The mosque committee had contested a November 19, 2024, order from the civil judge directing the survey of the 16th-century mosque. The committee argued that a second survey performed on November 24, 2024, occurred without any judicial directive, rendering it illegal.<\/p>\n
On August 22 last year, the Supreme Court expressed its willingness to hear the committee\u2019s plea concerning the high court’s ruling. The apex court had also mandated the parties involved to maintain the status quo as of that date.<\/p>\n
The case centers around a claim that the Jama Masjid was built by Mughal emperor Babur in 1526 following the demolition of the, now-revered, Harihar temple. On November 29, 2024, the Supreme Court ordered an immediate halt to the proceedings in the Sambhal court regarding the mosque and its survey.
