 India will look to build on the positives from the rain-hit opening encounter when they face England in the second T20 International at Old Trafford<\/strong> on Saturday. While the focus will remain on the team’s quest for victory, much of the spotlight is expected to be on wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson<\/strong>, who faces mounting pressure to convert his inconsistent performances into substantial contributions.<\/p>\n

The opening T20I at Chester-le-Street, Durham<\/strong>, was abandoned due to rain after India posted a competitive 189 for 7<\/strong>, courtesy of impressive half-centuries from Abhishek Sharma<\/strong> and captain Shreyas Iyer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Despite the encouraging batting display, attention has shifted towards Samson, whose place in the playing XI is increasingly being discussed with 15-year-old batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi<\/strong> waiting in the wings. The emergence of the young prodigy has intensified competition for places, leaving Samson with little room for continued inconsistency.<\/p>\n

Samson, who played a key role in India’s successful T20 World Cup<\/strong> campaign with three consecutive match-winning performances, has struggled to maintain that momentum. Although those performances elevated his stature in Indian cricket, recent form has once again placed him under scrutiny.<\/p>\n

In the washed-out series opener, Samson managed just one run off seven deliveries<\/strong> and never appeared comfortable at the crease. His inability to accelerate or adopt an aggressive approach added to concerns over his form.<\/p>\n

Questions have also been raised over Samson’s technique on seaming tracks. His vulnerability against deliveries moving off the pitch has been exposed in recent outings, highlighting a recurring weakness in his game. Throughout his career, Samson has often alternated between occasional high scores and a string of low returns, making consistency one of his biggest challenges.<\/p>\n

While the Indian team management is reportedly reluctant to rush Vaibhav Sooryavanshi<\/strong> into international cricket, continued struggles from Samson over the next few matches could strengthen calls for the teenage batter’s inclusion in the playing XI.<\/p>\n

Samson is not the only batter facing scrutiny. Middle-order batter Tilak Varma<\/strong> has also struggled to maintain momentum during the middle overs. His cautious approach against spin and slower bowling has affected India’s scoring rate at crucial stages of the innings.<\/p>\n

Statistics underline Tilak’s struggles in 2026. In 12 T20 International matches<\/strong> this year, he has struck only 12 sixes<\/strong>, averaging one maximum per game\u2014a modest return for a player expected to provide explosive finishing in the latter stages of an innings.<\/p>\n

India’s bowling attack is unlikely to undergo any changes for the second T20I. The Old Trafford<\/strong> surface is expected to provide some assistance to spinners, particularly wrist spinners. Interestingly, the best bowling figures recorded in a T20 International at the venue belong to India’s Kuldeep Yadav<\/strong>, although the left-arm wrist spinner is not part of the current squad.<\/p>\n

England, meanwhile, will rely on their formidable batting line-up led by captain Harry Brook<\/strong>, with explosive batters Phil Salt<\/strong> and Tom Banton<\/strong> expected to spearhead the hosts’ attack. The home side has also included express pacer Jofra Archer<\/strong> in the playing XI alongside fast bowler Josh Tongue<\/strong>, adding further firepower to their bowling unit.<\/p>\n

Even as both teams prepare for an important contest in the series, the biggest talking point remains whether India will continue to back Sanju Samson or eventually hand an opportunity to young Vaibhav Sooryavanshi<\/strong>, whose rise has generated significant excitement among cricket fans.<\/p>\n
