Union Minister of State Dr. Jitendra Singh visited the India Meteorological Department (IMD) today to review its indigenous “Multi-Hazard Early Warning Decision Support System (DSS).” This system has led to remarkable cost savings of \u20b9250 crore, demonstrating the effectiveness of Indian innovation in disaster management.<\/p>\n
During the review, Dr. Singh commended IMD’s commitment<\/strong> to creating a self-reliant<\/strong> and technology-driven forecasting platform<\/strong>. He emphasized its role in strengthening disaster preparedness and enhancing public safety across India. The DSS significantly reduced reliance on foreign technology and thus saved an additional \u20b95.5 crore in annual maintenance costs, aligning with the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Dr. Singh also examined the \u201cMausamgram\u201d<\/strong> initiative, designed to provide citizens with hyperlocal weather forecasts at the village level. This platform offers hourly forecasts for 36 hours, three-hourly forecasts for five days, and six-hourly forecasts for up to ten days. Citizens can access weather data conveniently by using their PIN code, chosen locations, or selecting their state, district, block, or gram panchayat. The service is accessible in all official Indian languages<\/strong>, ensuring inclusivity.<\/p>\n IMD has enhanced its weather alert generation process, extending lead time from five to seven days, cutting forecast preparation time by three hours, and improving forecast accuracy by 15\u201320%. These advancements underscore the significant impact of homegrown technology on disaster management.<\/p>\n During his discussions with IMD officials, Dr. Singh advocated for the integration<\/strong> of AI-based tools into the “Mausamgram” platform, aiming to make it more interactive and user-centric. He highlighted the importance of enhancing the Multi-Hazard Early Warning System to ensure citizens receive clear and actionable alerts<\/strong> for timely disaster response.<\/p>\n The Minister congratulated the IMD team on winning the National Award for e-Governance 2025<\/strong> at the 28th National Conference on e-Governance held in Visakhapatnam. This accolade recognizes IMD’s excellence in digital public service delivery<\/strong>, particularly through the DSS system.<\/p>\n In addition to technological advancements, Dr. Singh acknowledged the department’s achievements under the Special Swachhata Program<\/strong>. The initiative generated \u20b930 lakh from e-waste disposal and cleared 600 square meters of space within the department. As part of his visit, Dr. Singh participated in \u201cSpecial Swachhata Program 5.0\u201d at IMD\u2019s headquarters in Mausam Bhavan. He planted a sapling under the \u201cEk Ped Maa Ke Naam\u201d<\/strong> campaign and honored 50 \u201cSafai Mitras\u201d for their dedicated contributions to cleanliness.<\/p>\n Looking ahead, Dr. Singh outlined the future vision of Mission Mausam<\/strong>. By 2030, the installation of advanced meteorological instruments will enhance IMD’s forecasting capabilities. The initiative aims for 5×5 km-scale hazard forecasting, dynamic impact-based forecasting, and risk-based early warnings.
