Jammu, May 29: Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to arrive in Jammu on Thursday evening for a crucial two-day visit to the Union Territory, marking his first visit after Operation Sindoor.<\/p>\n
According to official sources, Shah is expected to land in Jammu around 7 PM. Shortly after arrival, he will chair a high-level security review meeting alongside Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and senior officials from the entire security establishment.<\/p>\n
The meeting will primarily focus on anti-terror operations and preparations for the upcoming Amarnath Yatra, set to commence on July 3. Intelligence inputs suggest increased threats from across the border in the wake of Operation Sindoor, prompting intensified security arrangements. Shah is also likely to assess the follow-up on directives issued during his previous visit to the region.<\/p>\n
After an overnight stay at Raj Bhawan in Jammu, the Home Minister will travel to Poonch at 10 AM on May 30. His visit there aims to interact with victims of cross-border shelling and assess the damage caused by Pakistani ceasefire violations. A special relief package announcement is expected during this leg of the visit.<\/p>\n
Poonch, one of the most affected districts, has suffered significant human and material losses due to recent shelling. Thirteen civilians lost their lives, and around 700 homes were reported damaged.<\/p>\n
On May 26, Sunil Sharma, Leader of the Opposition in the J&K Legislative Assembly, announced that the Central government has, in principle, approved a special package for reconstruction of 1,500\u20132,000 houses affected by shelling. The relief is proposed to be disbursed directly to beneficiaries through Direct Benefit Transfers (DBTs).<\/p>\n
Earlier, the BJP had constituted a five-member committee of MLAs to assess the situation on the ground. The committee submitted a report to the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Lieutenant Governor, recommending immediate financial aid beyond the existing SDRF norms, construction of individual and community bunkers for civilian safety, and government jobs for families who lost members due to the shelling.<\/p>\n
This visit also follows Shah\u2019s recent trip to Kashmir on April 22, following the tragic Pahalgam terror attack that claimed the lives of 26 unarmed civilians, including 25 tourists. During that visit, he met the victims’ families and led multiple security review meetings.<\/p>\n
