Patna \u2013 In a significant development, Union Minister Chirag Paswan has announced his opposition to the recent Supreme Court ruling that permits states to create sub-groups within the Scheduled Castes (SC) for a portion of the 15 percent reservation quota. Paswan, addressing a press conference here on Saturday, declared that his Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) intends to appeal against the judgment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Paswan expressed his disagreement with the court’s decision, arguing that it undermines the purpose of the SC quota designed to uplift the socially marginalized communities that have historically faced untouchability. He emphasized that the creation of sub-groups within the SC quota could lead to the exclusion of the most disadvantaged members of the SC community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOur party will file an appeal requesting the Supreme Court to review its recent judgment,\u201d Paswan said. \u201cThe concept of a \u2018creamy layer\u2019 should not apply to the SC quota. Allowing sub-groups within the SC quota will not serve the intended purpose of addressing the needs of those who have been historically oppressed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Paswan, whose late father Ram Vilas Paswan was a prominent Dalit leader, expressed surprise that the term \u2018untouchability\u2019 was not referenced in the Supreme Court\u2019s judgment. He argued that the majority of SC individuals, regardless of their economic status or educational background, continue to face untouchability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He further commented on the ongoing debate regarding a caste census, supporting the idea but suggesting that the findings should not be made public. \u201cI believe we should conduct a caste census, but the results should be kept confidential and used solely for policy formulation by the government,\u201d Paswan added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When asked about his alliance partner JD(U)\u2019s support for the verdict, which the party views as a validation of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar\u2019s policies, including the creation of the \u201cMahadalit\u201d category, Paswan refrained from commenting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
