NEW DELHI, June 14: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Friday called on the Centre and the Uttarakhand government to take urgent steps to prevent forest fires and to work collectively to protect the Himalayas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Her appeal follows the tragic deaths of four forest workers and injuries to four others while fighting a blaze at the Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary in Almora district, Uttarakhand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Gandhi expressed her sorrow over the incident, saying, “The news of the death of four employees who went to extinguish the forest fire in Almora, Uttarakhand and many others getting injured is extremely saddening. I pray to God for everyone. I request the state government to provide compensation and assistance at every possible level to the affected families.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gandhi highlighted the persistent issue of forest fires in Uttarakhand, noting that hundreds of hectares of forest have been destroyed over the past several months. She also mentioned similar reports of forest fires in Himachal Pradesh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“According to a study, the incidence of forest fires in the Himalayan region has increased manifold,” Gandhi said. She emphasized that climate change has severely impacted the Himalayas and the mountain environment, urging both central and state governments to take measures to prevent such incidents and to launch large-scale efforts to save the Himalayas with everyone’s cooperation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Last month, a resin factory in Almora district was also engulfed in a forest fire, resulting in the deaths of three workers attempting to extinguish the flames.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With the return of hot and dry weather, forest fires have once again become a significant concern in Uttarakhand. According to the latest forest fire bulletin from the state, seven incidents were reported in the past 24 hours, affecting 4.50 hectares of forest land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
