India has taken a significant diplomatic step by upgrading its technical mission in Kabul to full embassy status, enhancing its engagement with Afghanistan. This announcement came during External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s meeting with Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi in New Delhi on Friday.
Following the Taliban’s takeover in August 2021, India evacuated all its officials from the Kabul embassy. However, a technical team returned in June 2022 to resume limited operations. This latest upgrade reflects India’s goal to strengthen ties with Afghanistan, focusing on humanitarian aid, infrastructure development, and regional security.
In his opening remarks, Jaishankar remarked, “Your visit marks an important step in advancing our ties and affirming the enduring friendship between India and Afghanistan.” He highlighted India’s commitment to the development and progress of Afghanistan, stating, “As a contiguous neighbour and a well-wisher of the Afghan people, India has a deep interest in your development and progress.”
The minister reaffirmed India’s longstanding partnership with Afghanistan, characterized by the execution of several major projects, now renewed with this embassy upgrade. Jaishankar expressed appreciation for the Taliban’s sensitivity towards India’s security concerns, especially after the recent Pahalgam terror attack.
Jaishankar underscored the mutual challenges that both nations face, particularly cross-border terrorism. He asserted, “We must coordinate efforts to combat terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.”
Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi responded by emphasizing India’s crucial role as a supportive regional ally. He expressed gratitude for India’s humanitarian assistance and highlighted Afghanistan’s desire to bolster cooperation in trade, infrastructure, and education.
This upgrade of India’s diplomatic mission in Kabul signals New Delhi’s cautious yet strategic re-engagement with the Taliban-led government. The decision prioritizes security, regional stability, and maintaining long-standing connections with the Afghan populace.
