New Delhi: In a revealing statement on September 27, India disclosed that the Pakistan military had “pleaded” for an end to hostilities during the significant Operation Sindoor. Indian authorities emphasized this plea, asserting the absence of any role for third parties in matters between the two nations.
The remarks emanated from Petal Gahlot, the First Secretary at India’s Permanent Mission to the UN, following an address by Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif during the 80th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA). Sharif’s speech included commendations for former President Donald Trump’s role in preventing a potential war between the nuclear powers.
Gahlot sharply criticized Sharif’s address, describing it as an example of “absurd theatrics” designed to glorify terrorism, which Gahlot argued remains integral to Pakistan’s foreign policy. This rebuttal took place during India’s Right of Reply session at the UNGA.
In his address, Sharif proposed that Pakistan is eager for a “composite, comprehensive and result-oriented” dialogue with India concerning all outstanding issues and simultaneously criticized New Delhi for its actions in Kashmir, thus reigniting the debate over the contested territory.
Sharif specifically lauded Trump, saying his “efforts for peace helped avert a … war in South Asia”. He added, “In recognition of President Trump’s wonderful and outstanding contribution to promote peace in our part of the world, we nominated him for the Nobel Peace Prize. This is the least we could do … I think he truly is a man of peace.”
Operation Sindoor, which commenced on May 7, 2023, aimed at targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. This operation was a direct response to the devastating Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, which resulted in the loss of 26 civilian lives. The Indian government has firmly maintained that any agreement on halting confrontations was reached through direct communications between the Directors General of Military Operations of India and Pakistan.
