Omar Abdullah Unveils Gulmarg Convention Centre, Aims for Asia’s Davos

Jammu and Kashmir’s Chief Minister Omar Abdullah officially opened the new Gulmarg Convention Centre today, aiming to position Gulmarg as a premier international event destination. This modern facility was constructed at a cost of Rs 21 crore by the National Buildings Construction Corporation (NBCC) and is anticipated to elevate tourism, culture, and international conferencing in the region.

Unveiling a Vision: Gulmarg as Asia’s Davos

The commissioning of the Gulmarg Convention Centre marks a significant milestone for Jammu and Kashmir, particularly in terms of infrastructure development. Speaking at the inauguration, Abdullah expressed his hope that this world-class venue would help in establishing Gulmarg as a key player in the global MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) tourism landscape.

“We strive to make Gulmarg an ‘Asian Davos’, promoting it as a hub for high-profile events and conventions,” said Abdullah. His remarks came in the wake of rising hopes that the Centre could attract substantial international attention.

Strategic Developments and Future Plans

In addition to the Convention Centre, Abdullah laid the foundation stone for a Ski Hire Shop aimed at further enhancing Gulmarg’s tourist appeal. This initiative, developed by the J&K Cable Car Corporation, aims to bolster the region’s winter sports offerings.

“While building infrastructure is crucial, ensuring its meaningful utilization is even more important,” Abdullah emphasized, addressing the audience of local officials and development authorities present at the event.

Importance of Maintenance and Utilization

The Chief Minister pointed out that maintaining the functionality of the Convention Centre is imperative. He remarked, “It’s easy to construct, but the real challenge is consistent upkeep.” This sentiment highlights his commitment to ensuring that the Centre is not only built but also utilized effectively.

Abdullah mentioned that the original project proposal was missing essential furnishings, but assured that efforts were underway to finalize this aspect so that the Centre can start hosting events promptly.

Creating Vibrant Evening Experiences

Omar Abdullah also discussed enhancing the tourist experience in Gulmarg during the evenings, particularly in the winter months. Currently, winter tourists have limited options after the sun sets. “We need to provide more recreational opportunities, such as coffee shops and a digital cinema projection system, to enhance the evening experience,” he declared. This initiative not only aims to improve visitor satisfaction but also seeks to generate revenue by keeping the Centre active after daylight hours.

Encouraging Government Utilization

The Chief Minister urged various government departments to leverage the facility for meetings and training programs, ensuring that the Centre is used effectively until private sector interest develops.

“The Centre can serve as a refreshing change of location for programs held by education, health, and social welfare departments,” he noted.

A Landmark Addition to Gulmarg

Abdullah expressed his congratulations to the NBCC and the Gulmarg Development Authority for their efforts in making this project a reality, calling it a landmark addition to the tourism profile of Gulmarg.

“With proper management, the Gulmarg Convention Centre will become a hub for international gatherings and a vibrant space for cultural tourism,” he concluded, encapsulating the ambitious vision behind this new development.
